Lori Harasem, a 38-year-old woman living in Lethbridge, Alberta, is engaged to a man 12 years younger than she and has been called a “cougar” and even a “sugar mama” by her fiance’s friends.

She was not flattered.

“To me, a cougar is — or people think it is — an older woman who is desperate, that she is looking for a younger man to lure away,” she said.

Harasem said that her fiance’s family has still not accepted her because of her age. “They just assumed that I couldn’t do better or that I was going through a mid-life crisis,” she said.

Harasem also said that the labels and general negativity from others put pressure on the relationship and created unnecessary stress.

She feels that using terms such as “cougar” is sexist. “[The term] ‘sugar mama’ is derogatory but ‘sugar daddy’ isn’t,” she said. “There’s no term for the guy in that relationship [with an older woman].”

Valerie Gibson, the author of “Cougar: A Guide for Older Women Dating Younger Men” (Key Porter, $12.95), agrees that there is a double-standard. Women are labeled negatively for their sexual activity while men are not.
“It is very one-sided, because men have always had that freedom at any age, and then when women do the same, people think they’ve gone off the deep end,” explained Gibson, who introduced the U.S. to the term “cougar” in 2001 with the publication of her book.

“I deliberately set out to turn it into an empowerment image for older women rather than it being put down by society,” she said.

According to Gibson, labeling older women “cougars” actually originated in Vancouver long before Demi and Ashton hooked up. Canadians used the term “cougar” as a derogatory word for older women who hung out at bars to go home with whatever men were left lingering at the end of the night. Gibson didn’t like that the beautiful animal had such a negative connotation. “Not all older women who date younger men are cougars,” said Gibson. “Cougars don’t want long-term relationships — and most women do. They’re financially independent and sophisticated and smart and don’t want to get into something long-term with anyone.”

Basically, Gibson says, by her definition “cougars” are older women who are out to have a good time with younger men.

But some women find that definition degrading, too.

Linda Franklin, who founded the Web site TheRealCougarWoman.com two years ago, has a different definition in mind when she thinks of a cougar, which is why she coined the term “real cougar.” When she first read about the term cougar, she thought it was offensive because she saw it as portraying women over 40 as “lonely, desperate and on the prowl.”

“I think [Gibson’s] definition of cougar is old. … I beg to differ about women who are only out for sex and not for relationships,” said Franklin, who adds that many women who join her online community are looking for long-term relationships.

“I think that the ‘real cougar’ is a transition label that is empowering women to be everything that they can be,” she said. “Life after 40 is fabulous: not the end of sex, love, or earning. It can be the time that you go for all your dreams and goals … You do not have to wait for a man or anyone to say it’s OK,” said Franklin. “What I’m saying is that the woman is never defined by the man that she is with; it is other people that are giving her the label.”

Jacksonville resident Lavinia Gray, who is 47 and has struck up a friendship with a man in his 30s, said that people should leave the subject of women dating younger men alone because no one says anything about older guys dating younger women. But she also admits, “As a mother, that’s hard, I don’t know if I would like an older woman dating my son.”

One issue that both Gibson and Franklin agree on is that the label “cougar” is a transition toward empowerment: Gibson said that in time there won’t be a label, and Franklin admits she hopes the label disappears. Franklin uses the term “real cougar” to encourage discussion.

“These things need to be talked about,” said Franklin. “If it takes the term ‘cougar’ to redefine what a real cougar is, then this a very good thing.”

No matter how women feel about the label “cougar,” women generally seem to want to stop being labeled by others.

Robin Brown is a 49-year-old woman who has been living in New York City with her 38-year-old boyfriend for five years. “I’m all for women being comfortable in their sexuality and even being the aggressor, but I think if you’re truly comfortable with your sexual identity you don’t need a label for it.”

Harasem agrees. “There are Web sites where they bash cougars and support them, but I don’t feel I fit in with either; it’s about me being with a person I like,” she said.

Pittsburgh is a great Cougar-town. Capital Grille and Hyde Park are probably your best shots if you’re swinging for a man with money. Three martinis and they’d give you their social security number. Too easy and, again, we usually have our own money. We don’t want paid…we want laid. Bosanova is another hot spot for Cougar’z on the hunt. 

Both places are classy and have beautifully designed atmospheres that showcase excellent menus, wine cellars and, valet parking after 5 pm. Cougar’z always valet park. We don’t cross a street…ever…for anything. We wear open toe-heals in eight inches of snow because, well, mainly because we can, but because entrance and access are always made available for us. Always. Not because we’re old, but because we’re hot…and we know it and they know it.

My introduction to the United Kingdom of Cougar’z was when I got stuck in Sarasota, Florida. I met a young man twenty three years younger than me at the station where they housed private jets. When I discovered our plane would be unexpectedly grounded for repairs during the next three days, I stayed at a beautiful hotel on the beach. I wanted to know more about him, so I called the airport and within an hour, he was at my door. 

He was breathtaking. Crystal blue eyes, short hair, and broad shoulders with hands the size of baseball mits. We had room service…many times. What we did with the fruit was probably illegal in nine countries, but it was MY room. We walked the beach every morning. We watched the sunset from my balcony for the next two nights. We talked about things that seemed to range somewhere in the middle of where we both were in life. When the call came that the jet was ready, I left and never saw him again. We talk a few times a year, but not often. Seeing him again may ruin what we shared as it was most certainly not something on which we could ever build and deep down, we both knew that. It was what it was and that was perfect for the both of us. Cougar’z always leave…

Cougar’z shopping is much more complicated than simply buying a matching outfit at the standard boutique. 
Cougar’z don’t wear “outfits,” we wear “gear.” We dress ready to pounce. Whether we want to dance in our leather panties and strapless bras or simply want to leave you guessing…it’s up to us, but make no mistake, we have it on all the time.

Sexually, we are completely uninhibited. Socially, we are engaging and delightful when we recognize that we are in talented company. We are respectful and demand that in return. If a cougar drinks too much, she’s a lush…not a Cougar. Different  breed of cat. Cougar’z are cunning, but we’d never hurt you. We are demanding, but we silently give more than we receive. We are grateful and happy with who we are inside so you’d learn a lot simply by watching and listening. Our silence is deafening as we were taught to “capture someone’s attention simply by whispering…”

The majority of women who are ages 40-50′s are Cougars. Women in their 30′s are Pumas. Women in their 20′s are Kittens. Pumas and Kittens are considered Cougars in training.. L Women in their 60′s and older are Panthers. There are fewer Kittens, Pumas and Panthers than there are Cougars; but for the sake of argument, they are all “Cougars.” The oldest member of my dating site is a 77 year old Panther. The youngest is a Kitten in her 20′s.  

Here is what I have realized and here is what I have advocated to the thousands of Cougars I represent: YOU define what a Cougar is for yourself. Do not let the media. your friends, other Cougars, younger men or so called “trend experts” who just heard the word “Cougar” two years ago, tell you how to define yourself as a Cougar. There are basic ingredients that do make up the definition: an older woman who dates, mates and/or marries a younger man. That is the basic criteria of what a Cougar is. If you don’t do that, then perhaps you are just a feminist, or an advocate, but a Cougar you ain’t.

You don’t have to look like Courteney Cox, have Demi Moore’s money, have Madonna’s confidence, or Cher’s success to be a Cougar. 

People who say a Cougar is a “sexy, confident, successful, mature woman who knows what she wants” is leaving out the majority of women who consider themselves Cougars but who may not be successful or sexy or confident. In fact, she may be fresh out of a 20 year stale marriage, up to her eyeballs in debt and feeling insecure about those extra 20 pounds but finds that she is attracted to and open to a relationship with a younger man. And she is having one. Sorry, fantasizing doesn’t count. It does not meet the criteria.

So, if you are a Cougar, don’t be ashamed by this term. It is not derogatory. It is not a put down. “Wear the paw with pride”. Define who you are as a Cougar and dispel the myths that are out there. “Cougar” is just a word; and words can’t hurt you, shame you or guilt you. Ageism is the last barrier we are breaking down in dating. Even if you are not a Cougar at least now you understand a little more about what one truly is…and is not. And women who are Cougars, embrace the word and know who they truly are is defined by themselves, not anyone else.

The question is, however, what exactly are these women embracing or rejecting? What exactly does it mean to be a cougar woman?

For the past five years, we here at WhatIsACougar.com have made a life out of trying to understand the nature of what it means to be a cougar. We’ve learned that it’s far too convenient to make generalizations. That a cougar must be over a certain age. That she only dates younger men. That she observes the Half-Your-Age-Plus-Seven Rule. While each of these “rules” has its place in helping define what a cougar is, each of them is either too broad or too narrow. And that’s because being a cougar is ultimately about attitude. It’s about the way she carries herself and owns her sexuality.

While each cougar is unique (that’s what makes them great!), in our experience, there are a few common characteristics that help us understand the cougar woman.

She’s in Control
First and foremost, the cougar woman is in total control – of her life, her sexuality and her identity. She’s her own woman, independent, strong and sexy, confident in her self and unconcerned by what is expected of her by society. It’s that fearless attitude that makes a cougar.

As Ilana Eberson, CEO of Real Live People Party, remarks in the video from WhatIsACougar.com (below), “Everyone wants to equate the predatory nature of the cougar animal with the cougar woman, and she doesn’t have to be predatory. She can be nice. She can be, you know, a vixen. She can be sassy. She can be, you know, virginal. She can be whatever she wants to be.”

That gets to the heart of what it means to be a cougar woman. She’s found her path and proudly (and unapologetically) follows it. Because it often takes time for women (and men, also) to “discover” themselves, cougars are typically more mature women in their latter thirties and beyond.

She’s Independent
A cougar is not just independent-minded, she’s personally independent as well. She is likely a career women who has reached a comfortable level of financial freedom. She’s worked hard and fought for her success. She’s found that while men her age and older are often intimidated by her ambition and success, young men are drawn to it and hopeful to learn from it.

Her independence extends to relationships where she has no time for petty drama. She’s comfortable letting a relationship develop naturally rather than trying to force it. She knows a relationship takes work but also understands that one can’t be made into something it isn’t.

She’s Experienced
Let’s face it: the cougar is experienced. She’s more sophisticated and worldly than her younger counterparts. She’s worked hard, played hard and really lived. Her experience has resulted in one simple truth: she knows what she wants.

Her experience is particularly profound in the bedroom. To a young man she’s a living, breathing Kama Sutra, versed in the ways of pleasure. To be with her is an orientation into an unexplored world of contortionist positions, hidden erogenous zones, and foreign animal noises. She knows what she likes, how she likes it done and where, and instructs her cub on how best to give it. A night with her and he will uncover the secrets of making a woman beg for more. All men want those secrets and they know no amount of fumbling about with inexperienced girls will ever provide them.

She’s Undeniably Sexy
There’s just something about a cougar. Whether she’s the type that rocks a business suit or tight top and jeans, she just exudes sexual power. It’s not something you can quantify or categorize. You can only feel it.

A cougar knows that age is increasingly irrelevant. 40 is the new 30. 50, the new 40. Healthier lifestyles, a greater commitment to fitness and an emphasis on style, have all contributed to something young men have picked up on. Older women are smokin’. The popularity of yoga, pilates, unique diets and other health and fitness fads have cougars looking hotter and more attractive longer. In fact, the older she gets, the more delicious she becomes. Her toned body and and smooth skin coalesce with an earned stately grace to create a sort of sexual super woman.

She Likes the Attention
A cougar is quick to admit that when a young man expresses interest in her it makes her feel great, whether she’s into the guy or not. And why not? It validates all of the hard work she’s put in to looking hot and staying young. It proves that she’s still got it.

She also revels in the fact that other women are often jealous of her, particularly younger women. The cattiness of the young woman is just further validation that she, the cougar, is what men want. They want a piece of her sass, her experience

She’s Down with the Program
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, a cougar is proud to be a cougar. She wears the label as a badge of honor. She recognizes that it is tongue-in-cheek, but also finds it empowering. It’s both fun and sexy. And maybe she even likes the feistyness it suggests.

To her, “cougar” says, “I’m hot and I’m tired of men having all the fun.” She realizes that few people have been more neglected by society than the mature, sophisticated woman. Society expects her to dress conservatively, drive a station wagon and cart her kids to soccer practice. She’s watched Hollywood basically cast women like her aside, giving them nothing to play but ignored housewives, teachers with about as much to say as Charlie Brown’s, and useless mothers to obnoxious, ridiculously erudite kids. It’s bullshit and she knows it. It’s also bullshit that her male peers continue to be perceived as more respectable, more refined and more attractive the older they get, even when they’ve got some blonde bimbo with big fake tits on their arms.These women are taking back their sexuality. And they’re doing it under the moniker of cougar. God bless them.

Most of the celebrities in Hollywood have set the standard for what it means to be a Cougar.” However, how you define cougar is really up to the person who has a ‘cougar mindset.’ Real cougar women will tell you its all about youth and attitude.
